Mortgage Blogging 101, Part 2

A Business Tip from LTB Member Mark Madsen

LTB member Mark Madsen is a loan officer and mortgage blogger from Raintree Mortgage Services in Las Vegas, NV. Since 2005, Mark has specialized in real estate Internet marketing, and has developed many high-traffic real estate and mortgage platforms.

Passionate about teaching and enabling the success of others, Mark believes that "friends keep friends in business," and he proves it by regularly sharing his ideas with the LTB community.

Last week, Mark shared an article called Mortgage Blogging 101 to introduce the important topic of mortgage blogging and to help remove some of the mystery of social media for LTB members who have been thinking about blogging but don't know where to begin. In Mortgage Blogging 101, Part 2, Mark continues where he left off, discussing the "why" of mortgage blogging by answering the most important question you'll need to think about before you get started: Where's the money?

Mortgage Blogging 101, Part 2: Being a Purpose-Driven Mortgage Blogger.

I'm frequently asked why loan officers should blog and what results can be anticipated from all of the effort required. These are fair questions that should be openly discussed before you commit to a plan of action.

Exposure, communication, networking, strategic search engine placement – these are all possible answers, but, generally, not the motivating factors mortgage professionals need in order to take action.

The big issue that I have with the blogging/social media advocates is that most of them are seemingly reluctant to answer the real question directly:

Where's the money?
Before you can find the money, you have to define your purpose. Here are a few examples of how loan officers are leveraging social media and mortgage blogging to create business:

Communication
Dan Green communicates directly to mortgage clients through his blog for the purpose of establishing himself as a mortgage professional his clients and referral partners can trust and be confident working with. He commits to daily articles that are relevant to his clients' needs, while integrating everything into a thorough database marketing campaign

Check out Dan's blog at TheMortgageReports.com to see how a simple mortgage blog can produce millions a year in personal production volume.

Networking / Being a Thought Leader
Fred Chamberlin recently joined ActiveRain, an online social network for real estate agents, for the purpose of communicating with real estate professionals. By establishing his social authority within an online real estate network, Fred has the power to initiate high-traffic discussions that can serve his marketing agendas. His constant activity builds equity, essentially increasing an online footprint that he can leverage at any time to promote future web projects or referral partners.

In contrast to Dan Green, Fred's daily blogging activities require significantly higher levels of time and commitment. If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of social networking, follow Fred for a while until you get the vibe and figure out your purpose. Strategic Search Engine Placement
Paul Dunn develops niche blogs for the purpose of reaching a specific target audience at the moment they are looking for information online that may influence a mortgage transaction decision. Paul participates in social networks and as a guest blogger on other high-traffic platforms. This activity increases his "link juice" and click-through traffic to his online marketing machine, which is important to any blogger's success.

At Mastery Business Plan this week, Todd Duncan spoke about the Readiness Principle and putting people before profits. Even though the three loan officers mentioned in this article have different plans of attack, they follow the same principles of putting people before profits, creating significance, and taking action.

By identifying their why and establishing their online presence, these loan officers can quickly move in any direction that may lead to more business and more money.
